Should we be worried about a Chinese lab-manipulated coronavirus?

In China, four “humanized mice” were subjected to the laboratory-modified coronavirus, all of which died. The study is considered “very worrying” by the scientific community.

One coronavirus, known as GX_P2V, has been modified by scientists at the Beijing University of Chemical Technology in China. This mutant virus has acquired a genetic mutation that allows it to infect human cells, Le Figaro reports. The virus was injected into four mice, which themselves resembled human cells. All of them died of respiratory and nervous system infections.

This work was presented on the BioRxuv site, but has not yet been peer-reviewed by the scientific community. However, after a global pandemic, the idea of simply controlling the coronavirus, raises many concerns. The aim of this research is to work on a cure and a vaccine.

A “terrible and totally useless” study

“But all this could have happened with a virus of much less harmful potential,” laments Bruno Kennard, director of research at the CNRS.

“We need to intervene urgently to control these practices, before a disaster occurs,” adds the leader of the viral replication team at the Architecture and Function of Biological Macromolecules (AFMB) laboratory in Marseille, which justifies this research. Very alarming.

For his part, infectious diseases expert Francois Bullocks called the study “terrible and totally useless” on X (ex-Twitter).
