Salvador: President in War on Gangs

– ()

In El Salvador, Vice President Bukele is campaigning for his re-election as the country’s president. He built his reputation on the war he waged against gangs, which included numerous arrests.

The president of El Salvador who likes to call himself a “cool dictator”, Naib Bucale, is campaigning for his re-election. The 42-year-old increased his popularity by waging a fierce war against gangs. Police make the rounds in San Salvador, checking the identities of many residents and arresting those in possession of drugs. This operation shows the iron fist of the government which wants to eliminate gangs in the country.

Effective policy but at what cost?

A merciless war, which began two years ago, built the reputation of the President of El Salvador with a popularity rate of more than 90%. And with good reason, within a span of a few months, the capital, once known as the most dangerous in the world, became the safest. The number of homicides in the country has decreased by 70% due to Naib Bukhel’s policies. But at what cost? They say many residents have suffered ill-treatment and sometimes unjustified arrests.
