After a busy start to the year with releases, 2024 isn’t going to close with the highly anticipated launch of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The second part of the FF VII Remake project, this new adventure promises to be even more ambitious than the Final Fantasy VII Remake with its semi-open areas and especially its scenery full of secrets.. While the hype is already at its peak, the game’s co-director, Naoki Hamaguchi, has been giving interviews recently as part of promoting the title. During the meeting with The Gamer, The developer returned to a term that has been debated for over a year: JRPG.

Is Final Fantasy VII Rebirth a JRPG? The director gives his answer!

During the visit, TheGamer reporters asked Naoki Hamaguchi what he thought of the JRPG name. This is what it answers:

I don’t think I have a strong opinion one way or the other. In any case, from my point of view as a creator and what I do. I definitely look around the world to see who I’m making my games for and who I’m making them for. In that sense, I’m not really trying to stay within the confines of “it’s a JRPG, I’m making a JRPG” and all that.

That’s not how I approach games, but if a game comes out and the world calls it what I’ve made a JRPG, that’s clearly what the world thinks, and I’ll live with that. But I certainly don’t try to limit myself to that or anything else, I make the game I want to make.

"I make the game I want to make"JRPG or not, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's director doesn't care how his creations are rated.

In short, it is clear that The co-director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth doesn’t care if you call the game a JRPG or not.. This question seems surprising if we don’t have the context to understand why it was asked. About a year ago, a statement from Final Fantasy XIV creator and director Naoki Yoshida sparked a lot of discussion. As part of the promotion of Final Fantasy XVII, of which he was the producer, He explained that to him, the term JRPG was offensive and he felt it was a way to put Japanese games in a box.. Faced with this statement, the internet was a bit divided because many players did not have this perception of the term, or quite the opposite. So, it is interesting to note that the question is again asked to the co-director of the next major FF and his answer is radically different.
