With 5 million views, young Leah and her six friends, all hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital, defy the clichés about psychiatric internment. Among the thousands of reactions and comments on his videos, the same testimonials (“Herbal tea we give you in the evening, LOL, it’s the best time!”), curiosity and support.

A subject that appeals to the youth

It must be said that, on TikTok, there are many stories of detention. In the successful video, we mainly find “vlogs” of teenagers filmed in their hospital rooms and daily meals in the establishment’s canteen, punctuated by unusual activities and anecdotes. “How I ended up in a mental hospital a few days ago,” student Chloe began in the widely viewed video. While wearing makeup and including the words “commercial collaboration” in her TikTok, the content creator told her subscribers in late December 2023 about the manic episodes that led to her being hospitalized in a psychiatric ward. “I also thought mental hospitals were only for crazy people. And yet, I stayed there for three weeks,” insists Chloe, applying foundation in front of her smartphone, her voice quiet.
