Lawrence Sullivan, the “Florida Joker,” is seeking damages from Rockstar Games
Lawrence Sullivan, a Florida man who calls himself the “Florida Joker,” is threatening to sue Rockstar Games for using his likeness in the upcoming GTA 6.
Sullivan’s threats follow a high-profile case where Rockstar Games took action against an 18-year-old hacker who leaked details and images of Grand Theft Auto 6 and threatened to leak the game’s source code in 2023.
In these leaked images, Florida Joker claims that Rockstar used his likeness for a character. He vows to take legal action against the gaming company until the GTA V developer pays $10 million for his “pain and pain” and “defamation of character.”
In a TikTok video, the Florida Joker sent out a final warning video saying that if Rockstar Games didn’t pay $10 million, he would release recently jailed 18-year-old hacker Arian Kurtaj from custody, where they would work together. Hack Rockstar again and leak more upcoming games.
The good thing for all of us is that Florida Joker has set a deadline for Rockstar, demanding that the $10 million be paid by January 14, just days away. So one way or another, we’ll probably see a resolution next week.
For anyone who remembers, Rockstar Games was once sued for using likenesses of real people. In 2014, Lindsay Lohan sued Rockstar for using her likeness for the character Lacey James in GTA V, in which the famous poster model poses with a peace sign.
Another lawsuit was filed in 2014 by reality TV star Karen Graven, who also claimed that Rockstar Games used her likeness and story. Both lawsuits were dismissed. With an estimated revenue of $7.7 billion and sales of 190 million copies, GTA V became the second best-selling game of all time, behind Minecraft.
Only time will tell whether Florida Joker’s claims are true or his demands will be met. Any compensation for emotional pain, trademark infringement, invasion of privacy or defamation will be settled in court if necessary, and if action is taken you can expect big news, GTA 6 is likely to be the biggest release of the year when it finally comes out.
Rockstar Games will continue development on GTA 6, with recent rumors indicating a February 7, 2025 release date. No official announcement from Rockstar, but we can dream.
