Dangerously modified pangolin coronavirus in China
DECRYPTION – Strange manipulations have favored the appearance of highly pathogenic mutations in the coronavirus cousin of SARS-CoV-2. The experience worries many experts.
A virus, a pangolin, a Chinese lab… a picture that brings back bad memories. And this, especially since this virus, a cousin of SARS-CoV-2, has a much greater lethality. Discovered in pangolins in 2017, this coronavirus is known as GX_P2V. After manipulation by scientists at the Beijing University of Chemical Technology, it acquired a genetic mutation that allowed it to infect human cells and humanized transgenic mice. This work is presented in an article posted online on the BioRxiv site, and therefore has not yet been read by the scientific community with the aim of publishing it in a specialized journal.
“Humanized” mice
” This is research that is very worrying on several counts », comments Bruno Kennard, Director of Research at CNRS and Viral Replication Team Leader at the Architecture and Function of Biological Macromolecules (AFMB) Laboratory in Marseille. In 2020, when the pandemic…
