The Big Picture

  • Paul Bettany states that the death scene for Vision Avengers: Infinity War Had to improvise because the original script didn’t work as planned.
  • Bettany explains that he was initially cast as Jarvis in Iron Man and used the character’s lack of personality as a starting point to develop the vision.
  • Bett’s elaborate vision describes the demanding process of getting into costume, likening it to a gin and tonic. He also expressed excitement about working with Elizabeth Olsen Wandavision.

Speaking to Collider Maggie Lovitt This weekend at MegaCon in Orlando, Paul Bettany opens up on his time with Marvel which, to date, has now spanned over 15 years. Despite that tenure, Bettany’s visibility has really increased over the past 6 years, with leading roles Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity WarAnd Avengers: EndgameFollowing his first Marvel lead role in the acclaimed limited series, Wandavisionin which he appeared with Elizabeth Olson. That series allowed the two to explore the relationship between Wanda and Vision in more detail, after Vision’s murder. Endless War By Thanos.

However, as Bettany revealed, the dramatic and tragic death scene for her character didn’t go down as smoothly as it might have in the original. As is standard with Marvel films, there was a serious element of secrecy about things which meant that the cast did not know what was happening on a particular day until they were informed at very short notice. The only problem is, the death scene, the visualization of which he was shown, didn’t work. Which meant directors Joe and Anthony Russo calling on his actors to improvise.

“It was hilarious. None of us knew who was going to die until like the day before or something like that,” Bettany said. Jokingly, Bettany then added, “They kind of showed us a pre-visualization and everyone was like, well, I guess I have to take the kids out of private school,” before explaining the opening scene, according to the script, wasn’t. Act as planned, creating a need to pivot.

The Russo Brothers came to us (Bettaney and Elizabeth Olson) and said, “Hey, listen, can you improvise this scene?” And I go, “What? A fix for killing a robot? I have no frame of reference! And Lizzie just laughs at it, and we’re so relaxed with each other that… I don’t know how it would work without her, because we both really trust each other and, somehow, we managed to get something. Worked. “

How was Paul Bettany hired by Marvel?

On the subject of improvising robots being killed, Bettany also expanded on the process of portraying the vision on screen, with the actor originally appearing as Tony Stark’s artificial intelligence, Jarvis. The off-the-cuff comment about someone having “no personality” was actually Bettany’s use as a starting point for developing the character, as he stated how he was originally cast. iron man Back in 2008. During the events of Avengers: Age of UltronVision comes to life as a combination between the Mind Stone and Jarvis to form an artificial being, meaning that the character was almost a blank slate for the actor to work with.

Jon Favreau, who played my agent in a movie called Wimbledon, said, “Look, I’m directing this thing called Iron Man and I need someone who doesn’t have a personality at all, and I immediately thought of you.” How do you say no to that? So I was doing that, and it was a lot of fun and I came in at the end and solved everybody’s problem, which they couldn’t clear (on) the camera, all I could say was, “The bad guys are coming. , and they’re right behind you!” or whatever. … I think I made everybody laugh, and they went, oh, it’ll be good to have that on set. I think that’s how it happened. I think That they just thought I’d be fun to hang out with.

Bettany also explained how he captured the character’s humanity, saying, “My plan for him was that he’s omnipotent when he’s born. Age of Ultron). And then, as it gets more and more sophisticated in the amount of data it captures, It becomes more human. I mean, I guess when you talk about robots or artificial people or whatever, I guess there are two stories (that apply) really…Pinocchio and Frankenstein – “I’m a real boy now or who made me Made and for what?” We were definitely in the Pinocchio camp.”

of course, That transition meant going from the recording studio to on-set. And Vision, whose color palette is beetroot red, meant Bettany had to wear a very elaborate outfit. And as the actor revealed, the process was demanding. “I mean, I think my dresser should be paid extra,” he laughed. “The process is difficult. I have a radiator, underneath (the suit) that pumps cold water that I have to carry in a bag. A bit like being inside a gin and tonic.”

After Thanos lifted the Mind Stone from Vision’s head, Bettany thought his time at Marvel was over. That is, until Wandavision came along Having the opportunity to work with Olsen for an extended period of time and focus entirely on him rather than a small part of a larger ensemble was a huge thrill for Bettany, as he explains:

I think it was great fun for Lizzie and me. We both love working together, you know. She is a great, great scene partner, work partner. It’s boring, and it’s always ready and bold. I really liked working with him, we really enjoyed the large canvas. It’s always been fun because we have our own lane in the movies. And it was really fun to be able to spread out and play and there were so many different dynamic styles.
