A plane has crashed on a highway in Naples, Florida, killing at least two people

(CNN) –– At least two people were killed when a small plane crashed and collided with a vehicle on I-75 in Naples, Florida this Friday, according to local officials.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the private plane crashed in the southbound lane near Pine Ridge Road.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said five people were on board the Bombardier Challenger 600 when it crashed at 3:15 p.m. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.

Tracking data from FlightAware shows the small plane took off from Ohio State University Airport just after 1:00pm on Friday and was scheduled to land at Naples Municipal Airport before departing again for Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport.

In a Facebook post, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office said “two deaths have been confirmed.”

Robin King, director of communications for the Naples Airport Authority, told CNN that three people survived the crash. The king did not know the condition of the three survivors.

“The Federal Aviation Administration closed a large section of Interstate 75 in Collier County to investigate a plane crash with two confirmed fatalities,” the post read.

The sheriff’s office has not specified when the interstate will reopen.

Shortly before the small plane’s tracking data showed it crashed on the road, a pilot radioed air traffic controllers to report an emergency.

“I lost both engines. Emergency,” one pilot said in a broadcast captured by LiveATC.net. “Make an emergency landing.”

An air traffic controller authorized the small plane to enter the runway and ordered the other plane to stay close to the runway.

The pilot replied in the last recording heard from the aircraft: “Clear to land, but we won’t make it to the runway.”

The aircraft is listed on the Fort Lauderdale-based Hop-A-Jet website, which says it can carry 12 passengers.

CNN’s Greg Wallace and Jillian Sykes contributed to this report.
