A border crisis in Texas prompts “patriots” across the country to head to Eagle Pass to stop the “invasion”.

(CNN) — The standoff between Texas authorities and the Biden administration over border security has led the United Patriot Party to call on social media for “patriots” from across the country to travel to Eagle Pass to stop the “invasion.” The term “invasion” is used by far-right groups to refer to the immigration crisis at the border.

“This is a call to action for all American patriots,” United Patriot Party member Greg Gibson said in a video posted on Instagram.

Gibson goes on to say that starting Saturday, January 20 and continuing through at least January 28, “Patriots from across the country will gather in Eagle Pass to demand that elected officials uphold their oath to protect the border against ‘foreign aggression.'”

Gibson said a property owner in the area would allow the group to set up tents, motor homes and recreational vehicles.

Texas State Representative Eddie Morales, a Democrat who represents 11 counties in West Texas, including the city of Eagle Pass, says those “patriots” have been misinformed about border security and immigration policy. Instead of traveling to Eagle Pass, Morales says, they should camp outside Congress and demand that lawmakers act on immigration.

“Republicans control the House of Representatives right now, if they were really interested in solving this problem, they would fast-track the immigration and border security bill for tomorrow,” Morales said.

After former President Donald Trump’s election loss and the Jan. 6 coup, several groups calling themselves the Patriot Party emerged in an attempt to make Trump a third party, the Anti-Defamation League told CNN (ADL) in a statement.

The ADL says it began tracking “patriot” pages on social media in 2020 and found that while they are not inherently extremist, they are linked to far-right rhetoric, political causes and sometimes extremist groups and movements such as the Proud Boys. intersects.

Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber is concerned about the safety of the area because of the heated rhetoric on immigration, he told CNN. Schmerber says he is monitoring the situation, including the possible arrival of “patriots” from across the country this weekend.
