The British House of Commons voted in favor of the text on Wednesday, which must now be approved by the House of Lords.
British MPs on the evening of Wednesday January 17 adopted a controversial bill on the expulsion of migrants to Rwanda, a political victory for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who attempted a coup in his majority. During this second vote in the House of Commons, 320 MPs voted in favor of the text and 276 against, sending it to the House of Lords for adoption.
After resignations in the Conservative Party and heated debates in a parliamentary committee to tighten the text, dissidents rallied behind Rishi Sunak, who pledged to stop migrant boats crossing the Channel illegally. Announced in April 2022, this flagship project of Boris Johnson has never been implemented. This new version is intended to respond to objections from the British Supreme Court, which declared the project illegal due to fears for the safety of migrants, particularly those sent to Rwanda.
