Economist Jesus Reyes Harrols Gonzalez-Garza dies at 71

Mexico City, January 21 (EL Universal).- Sources close to the family reported this Sunday Death of Jesus Reyes Harrols Gonzalez Garza at age 71.

Jesus Reyes Harrols has been in failing health for six months, during which time he has been hospitalized or at home, but with medical attention.

Who was Jesus Reyes Harrols Gonzalez Garza?

The son of Don Jesus Reyes Harrols, considered the ideologue of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), he was a public official in the PRI and PAN administrations.

During former President Ernesto Zedillo’s six-year tenure, he served as director of Benobras in 1994–95, secretary of energy between 1995 and 1997, and ambassador to the United States from 1997 to 2000.

He was General Director of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) from December 1, 2006 to September 8, 2009 in the administration of former President Felipe Calderón.

He was an economist graduated from Mexico’s Autonomous Technological Institute (ITAM), with law studies at UNAM and a doctorate in economics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Harrols González-Garza was also part of the advisory editorial board of EL Universal, he also contributed opinion articles to the Gran Diario de México, his last publication “The Other Agenda: Contaminated with Resignation and Conformity”, in June 2023; In it he writes about the outcome of the Mexico state election, in which Morena was the winner.
