Stéphane Sejourne speaks in response to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s comments opposing “Palestinian sovereignty” in the Gaza Strip, after more than 100 days of shelling by the Israeli army.
After the Prime Minister of Israel reaffirmed his opposition to “Palestinian sovereignty” in Gaza, the Palestinians “have the right to sovereignty and a state”, announced this Saturday, January 20, the head of French diplomacy Stéphane Sejour.
“France will remain faithful to its commitment to achieve this goal,” Stéphane Sjourne continued on X (formerly Twitter).
Two-state solution
The French minister’s tweet comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statements opposing Palestinian sovereignty in Gaza and that Israel maintains “control over the security of the Palestinian territory”.
Israel must “make sure Gaza is no longer a threat” and this requirement “contradicts the demand for Palestinian sovereignty”, Benjamin Netanyahu explained during a telephone interview with US President Joe Biden this Friday, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The United States and Europe have been urging a two-state solution, which is opposed by the Israeli government, which is engaged in a war against Palestinian Hamas in Gaza, following an October 7 attack by Hamas in Israel.
The Israeli response in Gaza has killed nearly 25,000 people, mostly women, children and teenagers, according to Hamas’ health ministry.
