Who is Abby and who is playing her?
The Last of Us has cast Caitlin Dever in the role of Abby for season two of the post-apocalyptic series based on the video game of the same name.
The 27-year-old will join Bella Ramsay and Pedro Pascal in the second outing of the Sky exclusive series, which is set to premiere in 2025.
While fans of the Games are buzzing to hear the news, those not as familiar with The Last of Us’ story after the season finale may be a little confused. Let us explain…
In The Last of Us Game, Abby Anderson is the daughter of Jerry Anderson, who works for the Firefly, an anti-head surgeon revolutionary militia group.
After a pivotal moment in her life, Abby sets out for revenge, becoming the main character in the second part of the popular game.
She is a playable dual protagonist in The Last of Us Part II, and some argue that she is more of a main character than Ellie.
While she is often considered a villain in the game, she is not necessarily evil, instead filled with a need to avenge her loved ones and absolute conviction of her beliefs.
Abby is certainly a complex character, embodying moral ambiguity, and while we understand her anger and agenda, the default position to root for Joel and Ellie from the first game (and the TV series) makes it hard to fully fall for her.
In the game, she is voiced by Laura Bailey, also known for Fullmetal Alchemist, World of Warcraft, and Bleach, who made a cameo appearance in the show’s first season, along with fellow actors Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson, Jeffrey Pearce, and Merle Dandridge. who reprized her role as Marlene).
For Dever, this is her first ‘villain’ role, but not her first video game connection as she voiced Casey Drake in 2016’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
High-school flick Booksmart, biographical drama Beautiful Boy, Hulu’s sci-fi thriller No One Will Save You, Dever is a promising series of feature films.
And considering she’s also earned two Golden Globe nominations for her television performances in Incredibles and Dopesik, we have no doubt she’ll do the character justice.
