Can the customer decide how to pay?

According to Resolution 93/2023 of the Ministry of Local Trade in Cuba, starting from February, sellers, whether natural or legal persons, must offer electronic payment options with cash.

said Arielys Alfonso Valero, head of the electronic banking department at the Directorate of Banco de Credito y Comercio in the province. Escambre This measure seeks to provide options to those who prefer to conduct electronic transactions. However, he emphasized that physical money will not be eliminated, as some people do not have access to the technology or simply choose not to use it.

The resolution, in force from December to January, establishes that those who trade products or provide services must request their QR codes through the national payment platform, TransferMovil or Enzona.

Alfonso Valero emphasized that the intention is to allow people who already have cards and electronic means to use this platform without the pressure of using cash. He stressed that, despite the technical limitations, all economic actors are expected to adapt to this new provision.

Banco de Crédito y Comercio urges merchants to request their QR codes from the developers of Transfermobil and Enzona (Etecsa and Xetid), placing them in visible places and educating customers about the steps to make electronic payments.

“This resolution on electronic payments includes everyone from a pharmacy, a bodega or a small square to the self-employed, for example, a barber, a cafeteria, a restaurant. Wherever cash is generated, both possibilities should be given to the client, who decides how they are going to pay, whether by cash or online.”Alfonso Valero concluded.
