Support for patients and more innovative treatments against cancer
Innovative treatment against cancer or prevention, the Oncopole of Toulouse welcomes 14,000 patients every year. Patient care, innovative treatment or prevention Lillian Barrick, director of care for the establishment, gives her testimony.
In 2018, the healthcare institution welcomed 10,000 patients every year. Today he earns 14,000. Between research, care and awareness, the Oncopole of Toulouse is facing an increase in the number of cancers in the population. It also receives more and more patients from medical deserts.
There is more and more cancer in our society. The reason is the general aging of our environment and population.
Early detection of cancer is one of the most effective ways to achieve a cure: “The earlier we detect cancer, the better chance we have of treating it.Lillian Barrick, director of care at Oncopol, explains. This year we have launched an awareness campaign on ENT Cancer, on network, on television and among general practitioners. This cancer is very easy to detect and is better treated if it is caught early.”
Over the past twenty years, patient care has evolved; We treat cancer more specifically but also for the patient’s general well-being.
Before we only provided medicine, treatment, today we also help with physical activities, nutritionists, sophrologists and beauticians.
Lillian Barrick, director of care at Oncopol
“Oncopole of Toulouse was a pioneer in this field. The observation was simple, we fight cancer better with good support. Medicines have also improved and patients today live longer with treatment. So we should all be more supportive of long-term treatment.”
With direct access to a research center connected to Oncopol, patients have easy access to new treatments.”With direct access to care at the research center, patients have access to innovative therapies. It is a real plus for them. On the research side, we are doing a lot of work on cancer vaccines. The establishment’s director, Professor Jean-Pierre Delord, makes it a priority. We are also innovative in immunotherapy, i.e. specific treatments that will have far fewer negative effects on the body than radiotherapy or chemotherapy.”
