Marco Antonio Alfonso Breto, a 22-year-old Cuban who fled to Cuba hoping to reach the United States in March 2023, has been deported from the Bahamas to Cuba, where he is now being held at the Villa Marista prison, known for its facilities. Used by Cuban state security.
The news was revealed by journalist Monica Barro on her Facebook profile, where she reported that Marco has been in Villa Marista since Saturday. According to Barro, Marco arrived in Cuba on Friday, the day his mother, María Isabel Breto Freitas, got the call with the news. Later, she learned from another person that her son had been transferred to Villa Marista.
The young man’s mother hopes to visit him this Monday, as she has not seen him for more than a year. Barro also mentioned that a portion of the funds raised for Marco’s legal proceedings in the Bahamas would be sent to his mother in Cuba.
The journalist expressed her regret that the young man could not receive the international protection he requested despite his epileptic condition. Marco Antonio Alfonso Breto’s situation highlights the difficult circumstances faced by many Cubans seeking asylum and a better life outside their country of origin.
