The pressure on the healthcare system is not surprising, according to Mr Van Gooch. Every winter, respiratory complaints, infections and hospitalizations peak. However, the burden is not uniform and varies from hospital to hospital. “In theory, hospitals can continue to operate normally,” the manager assured.
The color-coding system is relatively new and was inspired by experiences during the coronavirus pandemic.
Since wearing masks has proven effective against the spread of influenza during epidemics, special recommendations have been made, with particular attention to ventilation of indoor spaces and protection of vulnerable people.
Concretely, the government strongly recommends that vulnerable people wear masks, preferably FFP2. Those close to them as well as individuals presenting symptoms of respiratory infections are also encouraged to wear surgical masks, especially in busy places such as public transport.
Wearing masks is also strongly recommended in the waiting rooms of healthcare institutions. This measure constitutes a recommendation and not an obligation, however, underlines Mr Van Gucht. Hospitals themselves can decide what steps to take.
Virologists estimate that Code Orange will remain in effect for several weeks. He does not expect to move to code red, which occurs in situations of very heavy burden on health care. A relaxing holiday might bring calm, it slips away.
