By now, we know that the rules of fashion are irrelevant. Wear black and blue together, mix patterns, don’t worry about matching your bag to your shoes, and, of course, perhaps most importantly, wear white after Labor Day. At this point, that old rule has been ignored for years, rightly so. Winter white has proven to be a lovely option in the colder months (and even cooler months if you’re thinking of a light white sweater in September or March). But if you don’t believe us, just ask the biggest names in television and movies. Because color was present on Sunday night’s Golden Globes red carpet — with Margot Robbie representing Barbie In fuchsia and Taylor Swift making her entrance in metallic green — it was white that proved to be the most popular choice of the evening, with more than a dozen stars hitting the red carpet in a variety of hues.
Now, where to begin? Perhaps with Natasha Leone, who wore a showstopping Schiaparelli haute couture dress that climbed up past her bust in a horn-like structure and covered her face in the frame. Then there was Elle Fanning, who took a more delicate approach compared to Leoni’s surrealist look. great
The star reminded us what true vintage looks like, embodying Grace Kelly in an ivory dress designed by Pierre Balmain himself. Greta Lee also embraced a more Old Hollywood feel in a white Lowe’s dress that evoked a modern Marilyn Monroe. Meanwhile, Keri Russell opted for something with a casual undertone, looking incredibly chic in her own palette-covered number from Jil Sander. But it was hardly all white gowns that passed the paparazzi that night. Riley Cafe looked like a Chanel bride in a white lace dress from the French house, while she Daisy Jones and the Six Costar Camila Morrone could have easily met him at the altar in her plain white Givenchy. Elizabeth Olson arrived in a corseted lace Vivienne Westwood gown, covered in ornate detailing at the bust. Gillian Anderson, meanwhile, used the white color of her strapless Gabriela Hearst dress to add a cryptic message to her look, as a closer inspection revealed dozens of white embroidered yonis that blended into the skirt itself, presumably a nod to her sex therapist character. . Sex education.
Then there was Ali Wong, who accepted her first Golden Globe in a draped Dior haute couture number, and Lily Gladstone, who took the stage as a winner in a white Valentino dress, which she covered with a huge black shawl. Cailee Spaeny added a pop of color to her white Miu Miu look with a subtle floral print, and while Hunter Shaffer’s ethereal Prada moment Technically
Being a very light pink, it’s close enough to include in this roundup (and generally too pretty to ignore). But it wasn’t just women who avoided red wine all night lest it stain their pristine clothes. All-white also took over menswear. Jonathan Bailey attended in a monochrome suit with wide-leg trousers courtesy of Givenchy, while nominee Andrew Scott almost matched him in Valentino. They were rounded out by Abbott Elementary star Chris Perfetti, who accessorized his white pinstriped Dolce & Gabbana suit with a black floral brooch that would have made Carrie Bradshaw swoon. In fact, imagining the prospect of three men dressed in white on the same red carpet chanted “You don’t own me.” A gender-swapped remake of First wife club.
Not that it’s entirely surprising that many stars chose to wear the same color to the event. There are only so many colors on the spectrum, and trends are bound to appear. Red was also the popular color of the night, seen on Julianne Moore, Selena Gomez, Florence Pugh, Barry Keoghan and many more. But white is a rare choice for several reasons. For one, it can easily be ruined by a rogue drop of soy sauce from your Nobu-cated dinner, and at an alcohol-fueled event like the Globes, spills are bound to happen. It can also be harder to make a statement in white than orange like Issa Rae or purple like Oprah. Still, all these artists proved that when done right, white can be just as impressive, and its unpredictable nature, especially in January, makes it the most fun to see on the red carpet of all. We’ll have to wait and see if this trend continues into awards season, but considering it was close to oversaturation at the first event, we wouldn’t be surprised to see it stay out of the polls next time around.
