To comply with the Digital Markets Act, Apple will authorize app stores other than its own in Europe. Fortnite’s publisher wants to take advantage of this to distribute its game through its own platform, the Epic Games Store.
“Remember Fortnite on iOS? What if we did it again?. With this simple phrase, Epic Games, the publisher of the survival game Fortnite, announced on its X account (X-Twitter) that it will be making a comeback on Apple devices. “In the coming months” on the European continent.
The American studio would in fact be able to distribute its successful game in Europe without going through Apple’s application store AppStore. It wants to do this directly on its own platform, the Epic Games Store, which should be authorized on Apple’s iOS mobile operating system.
The sudden change is due to European legislation on Digital Markets (DMA), which aims to restore more competition between big tech companies.
The text should come into force in March and to comply, Apple on Wednesday introduced a series of measures aimed at opening up its iPhone ecosystem. It allows, among other things, downloading apps to its devices without going through its appstore.
A small victory for Epic Games, which has been absent from Apple’s app store for nearly four years. In 2020, the studio voluntarily attempted to circumvent the commission system of both Apple’s and Google’s app stores, leading to its ban from both platforms.
For every purchase or subscription made to an app from the Apple AppStore or Google Play Store, the developer must pay a commission of up to 30%. The practice was widely condemned as anti-competitive and widely condemned by Epic Games, which filed a lawsuit in the United States against the two companies.
On January 16, the US Supreme Court ended the legal battle between Epic Games and Apple, refusing to hear a complaint filed by the creators of the Fortnite game. “The legal battle to open the iOS operating system in the United States has been lost. A sad conclusion for all developers »
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney announced. In Europe, the outcome is different due to the Digital Market Act, with which Apple must comply under penalty of fines representing 10% of its global turnover.
Apple also announced on Wednesday that it will reduce its commission on the AppStore, from 30% to 20%. It will also drop to 17% for developers who choose not to use the payment system integrated into the AppStore.
However, the company has not said its last word. Apple is already planning a new commission, named “Core Technology Fee”, which will especially apply to publishers who distribute their apps outside of the AppStore – which will be the case for Epic Games. More than one million app downloads per year on its iOs mobile operating system will pay 0.50 euros per installation. Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney immediately a “Unlawful and Anti-Competitive Scheme”.
