Jean Carlos Martinez died Dec. 17 as a result of sepsis caused by a group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus infection, which can cause strep throat and other serious illnesses, according to an autopsy released by the Cook County Coroner’s Office.
Other factors that contributed to his death were covid-19, adenovirus and rhinovirus, according to the autopsy.
The boy was living in a warehouse-turned-shelter in Chicago’s Pilson neighborhood, where he suffered a medical emergency, the city reported. He was declared brought dead soon after reaching the hospital.
The boy’s death reignited concerns about the state of shelters and questions about how Chicago is responding to an influx of people unaccustomed to the city’s cold winters and with few local contacts.
Chicago and other cities in the northern United States have struggled to house thousands of asylum seekers, many of whom have been bussed in from Texas over the past year. A few weeks ago, hundreds of asylum seekers were still waiting to be assigned housing at the Chicago airport and police station, and some of them were still camping on the sidewalk in front of the police station buildings.
