Among the most popular in this price range, we find the Samsung Galaxy A54, a perfectly balanced smartphone that meets all the requirements at this price. Google also makes affordable smartphones with its A series, including the latest, the Pixel 7a. An excellent camera phone, much appreciated for its software experience. Surprisingly, the front of these two mid-range devices features clean edges, except for the chin. Once turned on, these screens are very pleasant to use on a daily basis. On the Pixel 7a, the screen is a pleasure to use: well-calibrated, OLED and bright, it finally goes to 90 Hz, which makes it more fluid and therefore more qualitative on a daily basis. The South Korean firm is pulling out all the stops for its device’s screen, which has absolutely nothing to envy a premium smartphone: OLED, faithful colors, 120 Hz, and just excellent brightness, even in daylight. We also gave it maximum score in this category.
It’s also on the software side that the Galaxy A54 shined during our testing, also earning a score of 10/10. Delivered on release with One UI 5 based on Android 13, it is now possible to switch to OneUI 6 with Android 14. Don’t panic, the brand has simply adjusted, without disrupting the experience. Its interface appeals for its fluid animations, its features, such as modes and routines, the possibility to stack widgets on top of each other or create floating windows. We especially appreciate its durability, with four years of major updates and five years of security updates. The 7a benefits from the Pixel experience, one of the benchmarks in terms of software experience on Android. It is admirably fluid like the iOS interface, and offers many features and full accessibility. If the Mountain View firm now offers 7 years of major updates on its flagships, like Samsung with its Galaxy S24, here, you are entitled to 3 years of Android updates and 5 security updates.
Not a Snapdragon or MediaTek processor, the two brands highlight their in-house chips here, namely the Exynos 1380 for the Galaxy A54 and the Google Tensor G2 for the Pixel 7a.
For a South Korean smartphone, its chip allows you to play various games without problems, but without pushing the graphics settings to the maximum, it suffers from some slowdowns and a little more heat. Overall, it is capable of running all kinds of applications, and performs very well for everyday use. As for the Tensor G2 chip, it’s not a high-end lightning bolt, but installed on a smartphone at this price, it delivers good performance both in everyday life and in games. It is also slightly more efficient than its rival.
Compared to the Galaxy A54, the Pixel 7a struggles in terms of autonomy. It must be said that with its small size, Google’s smartphone is equipped with a 4,385 mAh battery, compared to Samsung’s 5,000 mAh. During our testing, it only lasted a day. For more intensive use, the phone must go through a charging box. And even at this point, it’s not the best. Its 18W load doesn’t help to recover percentages quickly.
With the A54, you can easily last a day and a half, while the most economical two days. Too bad charging is slow. With a 25W load, it took an hour and 22 minutes to go from 4% to 100%. It is still better than its rival, which takes more than an hour and a half.
Difficult choice? It is true that there is no shortage of qualities on either side. Especially since each offers a successful experience, and with scores of 9/10 and 8/10, these are highly recommended devices, but there are differences to consider.
With the Samsung Galaxy A54, you have a smartphone with a sleek look and a high-end screen. It is popular for its software monitoring, with its four years of updates. In this price range, it is very rare. The phone is also effective in terms of performance, photos and not forgetting durability. On the other hand, we would have appreciated faster charging.

The Pixel 7a will please fans of small smartphones, but also photo enthusiasts. Ultra comfortable in this area, this smartphone does better than the competition and its predecessors. It has better defined sensor, very good portrait mode, very good night mode, sharpness, clarity, colorimetry… in short, everything! Google also adds its high-end chip, the Tensor G2, which delivers excellent performance. The software experience is one of the best, but with three years of updates, it’s a bit tight… The downside that must be considered is autonomy. Without being bad, it’s not incredible either.
