They lost control of Peregrine, the nodule that intended to land on the moon

According to NASA, Astrobotic Peregrine Mission One aims to deliver NASA and commercial payloads to the Moon for the purpose of investigating the lunar exosphere, thermal properties and abundance of hydrogen in the lunar regolith, magnetic fields, and the radiation environment of the lunar surface. On January 8, a Vulcan Centaur rocket was launched bound for the Moon. It flew from Cape Canaveral in Florida, United States, to begin a journey that would take up to two months to reach the satellite. The rocket was designed to carry two nodules: one from a private funeral service company in space and another from NASA, called Peregrine One, of which, hours after takeoff, they lost control.

The private company Astrobiotic is in charge of operating Peregrine, and it was they who confirmed that the module had strayed from its course. In the words of the company, after Peregrine separated from the Vulcan Centaur and its propulsion system was successfully activated, “an anomaly occurred that prevented the astrobiotic from reaching a steady state toward the Sun. The team is reacting in real time as the situation develops, and updates will be made. More information will be posted as it becomes available,” the company said in a statement.

Don’t miss: They found a giant 2-meter tusk at the bottom of a coal mine.

Peregrine One is 1.9 meters tall and 2.5 meters wide and will remain on the lunar surface for 10 days. It is operated by the private company Astrobiotic, and, according to Chris Culbert, director of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative, its main purpose will be to conduct experiments and collect critical data.

Also traveling on board will be a rover called Iris, which weighs two kilograms and is the size of a shoebox. EFE Agency. It was built by students from Carney Mellon University in the United States and hopes to photograph lunar geology. It also has radiation sensors and multiple spectrometers that will measure the resources available at the landing site: an ancient hardened lava flow that will allow us to delve deeper into the geological history of the satellite, as Paul Niles explained. EFE.

In fact, the spot is considered an enigma, as it is part of the darkest spot on the Moon.

The Vulcan Centaur second stage is part of the Celestis Memorial Spaceflight Funeral Company, also known as the Enterprise flight. It will release 265 capsules containing cremated remains and DNA samples from the creator of the original Star Trek series, Gene Roddenberry, along with his wife Majel Barrett Roddenberry and other members of the original cast, such as Michelle Nichols (who played the role). Lt. Nyota Uhura, and James Doohan (who played Scott Montgomery). Its remnants are expected to continue orbiting the Sun forever.

For now, Tori Bruno, president of the United Launch Alliance (ULA), said the launch was very peaceful. “Honestly, at one point I thought my hearing aid was damaged because nothing was happening. It was clean, especially for the first launch, like the rest of the mission,” Bruno said.

It is estimated that the Astrobiotic-led mission had a budget of around $100 million and is part of NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the Moon and, in the long term, send astronauts to Mars. The project is based on the vision of establishing a permanent presence on the Moon to conduct scientific research and use it as a launch pad for deep space missions, including Mars.

In addition, and as the newspaper remembers The country of Spain, taking a manned mission to the moon is no easy task. Many countries have failed in this attempt, not to mention that the United States did not return to the lunar surface for 50 years after its Apollo 17 mission in 1972.
