Step.- A Socorro man who was repeatedly arrested and released over the past year is back behind bars after allegedly fleeing El Paso police in a stolen vehicle last week, authorities said.
Armando Bejarano, 37, is accused of stealing vehicles and fleeing from authorities and various other crimes, including drug possession, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, according to jail records and law enforcement. Officers
After his latest arrest Thursday, Bejarano remained jailed Sunday at the El Paso County Jail downtown under a total bond of $355,000, records show. A bond hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
A news release from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said Bejarano was “arrested 27 times” throughout 2023, but El Paso County Jail logs show that is the number of charges, not the number of times he was incarcerated.
Jail records show Bejarano was arrested and charged nine times in 2023 and four times in 2022. He was released on bail in each case last year, except for one count of possession of drug paraphernalia, when he was released on $500 cash bail. On January 11, 2023.
The drop that shattered the glass
The latest arrest was made on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2024, when Bejarano was allegedly driving a stolen 2013 Chevrolet 2500 when officers tried to stop him in the 8700 block of Gateway East Boulevard near George Dieter Drive, El Paso police officials said.
Bejarano allegedly refused to stop in the 9500 block of Escobar Drive, drove erratically and damaged property.
A search by El Paso police, the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) air unit and El Paso County sheriff’s deputies led to Bejarano being found in the 10800 block of Robin Road in Socorro, officials said.
Bejarano was arrested on suspicion of criminal mischief, theft of property and evading arrest or detention.
The judge was gentle
This latest arrest comes after Bejarano was arrested a week earlier in connection with warrants from three other local law enforcement agencies.
Bejarano was arrested Dec. 28 by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office in connection with four outstanding warrants, sheriff’s office officials said.
He was arrested on a Sheriff’s Office warrant for theft of property; One warrant for theft of property from the Horizon City Police Department and two warrants from the Socorro Police Department for evading arrest and fleeing with a motor vehicle, officials said.
Bejarano was booked into the El Paso County Jail on Thursday, Dec. 28 in connection with court orders for bail totaling $71,500.
His bond was reduced to $41,000 by a judge on Saturday, Dec. 30, “despite his extensive arrest history,” sheriff’s office officials said. He posted bail and was released from jail on Sunday, Dec. 31, records show.
