The PS4 masterpiece comes to life on PlayStation 5, and even if the game is incredible, The Last of Us 2 Remastered doesn’t just have merits.

After the rest of this announcement

Unveiled barely a month ago, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is already set to land on our PS5. Just like the first episode, another masterpiece by Neil Druckmann and his teams “More 2024” is to show itself in the light, with a higher resolution and a continuous 60 frames per second in the performance mode. In this article we will mainly focus on the additions and new features of the remaster. As for our overall opinion on The Last of Us 2, it hasn’t changed an inch and you can find it in the article below.

  • Gender: TPS
  • Release Date: January 19, 2024
  • Platforms: PS5
  • Developer: Naughty Dog
  • Publisher: PlayStation
  • Price: €49.99 (€10 upgrade between PS4 and PS5)
  • Tested on: PS5

The Last of Us 2, a game ahead of its time

From a purely technical standpoint, it’s hard to see the huge graphical gap between the PS4 version and this new PS5 version, and for one simple reason: at the time of its release, TLOU2 was way ahead of its time. . Part of this final wave of PS4 games, along with FF7 Remake and others, has put stars in our eyes about the end of this support’s life. Same thing in terms of ambitions, with a very, very long game, but that’s saying a lot. And one will expand on this version as well, with the integration of some scenes cut from the base game. It’s a big piece, with a lot of narration, but everything is so well paced and calibrated that the 25 to 30 hours required for the adventure fly by on their own.

As for the quality of the remastering, we think the game didn’t benefit from the same care as the first episode, with minimal retouching and some “flaws” already present on PS4. For 60 frames per second, if you launch it from your PS5, it is already present on older versions of the game. Apart from the famous cut scenes (which add nothing significant to the plot), TLOU2 Remastered doesn’t really have a solid argument under its skin for you to pay the €10 upgrade, unless you want to completely dose its roguelite mode, No Return.

No return mode, a nice addition without much

This fashion is for Roguelite at PlayStation Studios, as after announcing and immediately releasing God of War Ragnarok’s Valhalla as a free content update, Sony confirmed that this remaster will also have this kind of challenge. We spent a few hours there and despite enjoying TLOU2’s always brutal combat, Sans Retour struggles to prove itself interesting. Specifically, you choose a character that matches the initial weapon, then follow a series of specialized arenas, all with conditions and between which you return to the hub to improve your skills and your weapons for the run. Among the permanent content to unlock, new terrain and new characters, which will spice up every trial.

There are certainly new enemy formations and encounters, along with some frankly tense encounters, but nothing that forces you to stay glued to the controller to play the games. The main concern is due to the sharp pace of the effort, with a return to headquarters, before returning directly to the heat of the action. In comparison to other recent Sony productions, Valhalla managed to attract players with some additional small scenes and new environments. In short, even if there is a way to have fun sans retort, that’s not the main argument for this new version of TLOU2.

Our take on The Last of Us Part 2 is recapped

Still a masterpiece, nothing to say. If you want to start Season 2 of the HBO series, you absolutely have to do The Last of Us 2 because its subject matter is huge. On the other hand, not sure if The Last of Us Part 2 will be purchased and remastered. Wise: Running the PS4 version of the game at 60 frames per second on the PS5 is more than enough to enjoy the latest Naughty Dog in excellent conditions. The remaster definitely has a few more cutscenes and a very nice roguelite mode, but unless you’re one of the series’ hardcore fans, it’s hard to recommend you check it out (again).
