The International Energy Agency (IEA) will open its doors to a new member

For many years, India has committed to significantly reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. Although the country is the third largest emitter in the world, it has managed to ensure that a quarter of its electricity production now comes from non-fossil sources, including hydroelectricity, nuclear power and, above all, renewable energy. During the period 2005-2019, India reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 33% and aims to reach 45% by 2030. This performance is the result of an ambitious energy policy aimed at reducing dependence on fossil fuels, despite the challenges posed by the growing energy needs of its population. This achievement is partly driven by significant increase in forest cover and adoption of green hydrogen, highlighting India’s commitment to sustainable and innovative energy solutions.

Consequently, and at the country’s request, the AIE, at its 50th anniversary meeting in Paris from February 13 to 15, 2024, announced that it was opening the membership process to make India its 32nd member country. ” The Government of India has asked to become a full member of the IEA (…), we have decided to give a positive response, and we are starting the process of discussion for India to become a member. “, said Fatih Birol, president of the International Energy Agency.
