RMC is working with electric vehicle owner Sebastian. While he used to regularly go to the recycling center for free, he now has to pay an entry fee because his car is considered too heavy.
Sebastien lives in a small, quiet house in Fezin, in the metropolis of Lyon. He is the one who maintains his house, his garden, who does all the odd jobs. So he regularly goes to the recycling center and for that he has a very practical small utility vehicle, which runs on diesel.
A year ago, he decided to swap it for a similar model, an electric one. An environmentally-friendly choice that he almost regrets today: when he first goes to a recycling center, he is asked to pay 40 euros.
“I used to go to the recycling center without any worries, four times a month for free if I wanted. And there, changing vehicles, because they are electric, suddenly, because of their extra weight, they get a bill.”
In Greater Lyon, entry fees to recycling centers are based on weight. And electric vehicles, because of their batteries, are heavy. An anomalous situation for Sebastian, especially for the metropolis of Lyon.
“The Green Mayor encourages people to switch vehicles, drive less and pollute less. Hence my incomprehensibility of charging for an electric vehicle, while the same vehicle in diesel or gasoline will not be charged for passage”.
In most of the 21 other cities, such as Lille, Rouen, Strasbourg and Montpellier, individuals have free access to recycling centers, without weight or engine conditions.
“RMC is committed to you” so Grand asked Leon if he intended to review his copy. Not at all, replies Metropolis, which has already adopted its rules: for thermal vehicles, entry is free up to 2 tonnes, compared to 2.4 tonnes for electric vehicles. And Sébastien’s Berlingo weighs only 10 kg. So it will be an “isolated case”, “the number of complaints on this subject is very low” we are told.
It is a green municipality choice and it is also a roundabout way of allowing SUVs, even if they are electric, as they weigh more than a conventional vehicle. Moreover, in Lyon, parking follows the same logic: electric cars benefit from being three times cheaper than the residential rate, unless the weight exceeds 2.1 tonnes.
Moreover, in Paris, a similar measure has just been adopted. From September, electric vehicles weighing more than 2 tonnes will pay three times more to park within city limits, but only for visitors, not residents of the capital.
