The House will decline as it stands to investigate aid to Ukraine, the speaker announced

This risks being the nail in the coffin of American aid to Ukraine. The Republican leader of the House of Representatives assured on Monday that the lower house of the American Congress will not investigate as he supports the text of negotiations by senators providing new funding for Kiev.

“The Senate’s foreign assistance bill remains silent on our nation’s most pressing problem,” Mike Johnson blasted in a statement, referring to the migrant crisis along the border between the United States and Mexico.

A deal for nothing in the Senate

On Sunday, the Senate nevertheless took a decisive step to adopt enormous new aid to Ukraine, with a procedural vote that had to be confirmed, specifically 61 billion for Ukraine, 14 billion for Israel against Hamas and approx. $5 billion for Taiwan

“Today, it is no exaggeration to say that the eyes of the world are on the American Senate,” said Mitch McConnell, the leader of the Republicans in the upper house. “We have not equipped the brave people of Ukraine, Israel or Taiwan with lethal weapons to win philanthropic awards (…). We do it because it is in our own interest,” he added.

Pressure from Trump

Two years after the start of the Russian invasion, elected officials of the United States, Ukraine’s main military backer, have been unable to agree on the recognition of new funding.

In the midst of the presidential campaign, the equation has turned into a stalemate between Democratic President Joe Biden, who is urgently seeking this new funding, and his predecessor Donald Trump, who assures that if he is re-elected in November, he will compromise. War between Russia and Ukraine “in 24 hours” – without explaining how.

Even without a mandate, the former president recently managed to torpedo the conclusion in Congress of a compromise on the package for Ukraine. And on Saturday, he threatened that, if he returned to the White House, he would not guarantee the protection of NATO countries against Russia if they did not pay their share, even saying it would “encourage” Moscow to attack them. Joe Biden called his comments “sad and dangerous” on Sunday.
