This almost wasn’t going to happen in theaters. BikeridersA star-studded biker drama that looks like Martin Scorsese helming Sons of Anarchy, had a setback last year on its way to theaters. Disney/20th Century Pictures decided to withdraw its release plans, but fortunately, Focus Features saw the value in bringing the film to the big screen.
This year, Tom Hardy and Austin Butler will join many more rough-riding actors (the ones you know and love) as they roar through cities and cornfields. Let’s know some finer details about this movie.
Biker soap operas are a mood, as the kids say, and Butler recently revealed (while talking to Josh Brolin The interview
magazine) that one of the biggest parts of the project was that Tom Hardy was a total hoot:“(T)here is an intimate sensibility to The Bikeriders. It’s the roaring engines and the smell of grease that we have to live around. It was nice to go to something that felt more independent and play around in that space for a while. But one thing I was thinking about earlier, when you were talking about comfort on set, Tom Hardy surprised me. I pictured him as this grizzly bear, always serious. And really, he’s one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. He’ll keep joking until action is called, and then he’ll be the most intense person I’ve ever seen.”
Bikeriders They take their name and inspiration from photojournalist Danny Lyon’s stunning, black-and-white photography book of the same name, which he dictated during and after his time with a real-life biker club in the 1960s.
The film revolves around a cast led by two Oscar nominees, Hardy (as Johnny), Austin Butler’s mentor to up-and-comer Benny. Jodie Comer steps in as Benny’s old lady, Kathy, as her life revolves around a Chicago-based convention over the course of a decade. Naturally, the club will transform from an idealistic group of outsiders to a more 1%-centric outlaw gang, and I can’t wait to see Hardy lose his power over that.
Will this finally be an awards-circuit film? Don’t count on it. TheInSneider previously relayed how the film did well in the festival format, but executives decided that a commercial focus would be better. So, it should be entertaining, which we need more of in theatres.
Besides Hardy, Butler and Comer, Bikeriders Stars Norman Reedus (as Funny Sonny), who also spends most of his time zooming around on a bike, along with the likes of a happy Keanu Reeves. The film also stars Boyd Holbrook, Michael Shannon, Damon Harriman, Carl Glusman, Beau Knapp, Mike Fast, Toby Wallace and Happy Anderson.
Six months after its planned Disney release date, Focus Features will drop Bikeriders In theaters on June 21, 2024. Given that superheroes almost certainly won’t dominate the box office this summer, these moviegoers could be antiheroes, and you know what? It is very much about time. Let’s ride, y’all.
Below, you can see Jodi wash off the last of Villanelle while falling for Comer’s semi-greasy butler.
