As every year since 2013, Airlines Rating publishes the ranking of the safest airlines in the world. Out of 385 carriers analyzed, the reference site for the safety and evaluation of air services establishes its top 25. Serious incidents in recent years are one of the main criteria Airline Ratings takes into account in making its rankings. Government audits, which are carried out by aviation governing bodies and major associations, also take into account the age of the fleet. So which airlines are in the top five?

Air New Zealand ranks first in 2024

In 2024, by just 1.5 points, Air New Zealand overtakes the carrier Qantas, which was number one on the podium last year. Currently it is considered as the safest airline in the world. Available in nearly fifty countries around the world, it has announced an order for eight Boeing 787-10s for delivery scheduled between 2022 and 2027. In 2019, it has already been crowned the best company in the world.

Qantas thus drops to second place in the rankings, but Geoffrey Thomas, editor-in-chief of Airline Ratings, states in his report, “The margin of safety between these top twenty-five companies is very small.” In 2022, the turnover of Australian airlines amounted to 9 billion euros. The third position is held by another Australian carrier, Virgin Australia. Etihad Airways may have only been in existence since 2003, but the Abu Dhabi-based airline takes fourth place in the ranking, while Qatar Airways, repeatedly voted the world’s best airline, is fifth. Despite being ranked 23rd, Air France still ranks among the top safest air carriers in the world.
