Streamlines immigration processes in the United States

As a result of policies implemented in the last two years, the US Immigration Service ensures that its processing is taking less time.

The federal agency specifies at least 25 core services and promises greater agility by 2024.

But, if we talk about one of the processes most affected by delays, it is impossible not to mention the citizenship process. This is done through Form N-400 from the Office of Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

In this sense, since June 2022, some media outlets reported delays in several USCIS offices. That is, it took up to 24 months for the request with the Christianstadt, Virginia facility to be processed and decided.

It was also known that all offices took an average of 14.6 months to process the N-400 form, which equates to 584 days.

What can we expect in 2024?

It is important to note that, according to the latest data published by the agency, today the panorama is different. This is, in part, related to the work of USCIS during 2023.

Its objective is none other than to improve the customer experience and reduce the backlog of cases. Likewise, the agency expressed that it aims to address humanitarian needs and strengthen employment-based immigration.

Meanwhile, USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou commented that the agency “completed a record number of cases in 2023.”

Separately, in 2022, the agency established new internal cycle time targets for 25 forms. All of this to direct the agency’s efforts to reduce the case backlog.

In terms of citizenship, some analysis shows that in that year (2022), the delay was six months. The same time period was for processing Form I-148 (Registration of Permanent Residence or Adjustment of Status).

A family member’s petition (Form I-130) also took six months; Application for Fiance (Form I-129F) and Motion to Appeal (Form I-290B).

The same happened with Form I-730 (refugee application); Form I-90 (green card replacement); and Form I-821D (DACA renewal).
