The organization therefore recommends the development of a research and development plan should a currently unknown pathogen emerge.
Pathogens that are transmitted from animals to humans cause most modern epidemics. These so-called zoonotic diseases are increasing at an “exponential rate,” according to a study published in BMJ Global Health, which reviewed 60 years of epidemiological data. They could kill 12 times more people in 2050 than in 2020, especially under the effects of climate change. Hence the importance of being prepared.
