Editorial from CubitaNOW ~ Saturday January 6, 2024

The death of Jose Gilberto Valdes Aguilar, one of the most distinguished career journalists in the profession in that province, caused great shock in Camague this weekend.

Local press reports indicate that Cuban died on the night of January 5, 2024.

According to reports, he first worked at the Adelante newspaper, as well as at Televisión Camagüey, the local telecenter’s digital sites, and Cubaperiodistas.

His vast knowledge of the sugar agriculture industry – largely due to the studies he completed at the Alvaro Barba Machado Polytechnic Institute in this city – made him a point of reference in the province when it came to addressing the sector, especially as it pertained to sugarcane plantations,” he admits.

“Economic matters also did not escape his reporting gaze; A teacher of several generations of professionals, who saw in Professor Valdes a man with enough journalistic skills to learn from him; And he was the founder of the journalism degree at the University of Camaguey, in 2006,” they added.

Colleagues, family and friends bid him farewell on social networks.

“Oh, what can I say. This loss hurts. He was special. Master of caliber. Together with him I learned the secrets of this beautiful, unusual profession and, as he said, “a profession that fulfills a journalist.” Baby, I didn’t find out about this very unfortunate news in time. My deepest condolences. I am with you in this unimaginable pain. Hugs to your mom, your girls, your brother and TQM to you. I’ll hug you baby”; “Unfortunate loss of a good colleague and an excellent person,” some of his colleagues wrote.
