Roblox relies on Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve its platform. After a chatbot to help developers create virtual worlds, the company has just launched a real-time AI translator for text conversations to facilitate communication between users speaking different languages. Currently, the tool works with 16 languages, including English, French, Japanese and Russian, but the platform plans to add more.
Specifically, when a user communicates with another, they will automatically see messages translated into their language in the chat window, according to Roblox. “These translations are displayed in real time, with a latency of about 100 milliseconds, so the translation happening behind the scenes is almost invisible”Its technical director, Daniel Sturman, confirmed in a blog article.
To make this possible, Roblox has developed a Unified Large Language Model (LLM) of translation based on Transformer (a neural network designed to understand the context and meaning of sequential data), capable of handling all language pairs. “It’s like having multiple translation apps, each specializing in the same group of languages, all available with a single interface”

Thus, from the source sentence and the target language, “We can activate relevant “experts” to generate translations”.The model was trained on open source data and company translation data. Human reviewers also translated popular and common words for each language to help understand modern slang. Roblox assures that its model has many advantages. In particular, it will detect the correct source language of the content, even if it is not defined or incorrectly defined. It can also detect and translate the message into the target language, even if it contains a mixture of languages.
The platform plans to go beyond text exchanges, exploring other uses for its model such as automatic translation of voice conversations.
