Republican congressmen rush to impeach Joe Biden after prosecutor’s report | International

On Thursday, people in the United States started talking about the 14th Amendment to the Constitution and finished talking about the 25th. In the morning, a Supreme Court hearing debated whether former President Donald Trump should be disqualified from running for office for participating in a riot, in the context of the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol. Afternoon, Congressman. Republicans argued that it was time to invoke the 25th Amendment, aimed at impeaching the president if he was unfit to hold office. This was prompted by a report by special prosecutor Robert Hurr, which characterized President Joe Biden as an “old man with a bad memory” who did not remember when he was vice president or when his son died. These mentions, and many others in the same vein, have fueled outrage against the president, his lawyers and Democrats.

President John F. The 25th Amendment, passed after Kennedy’s assassination, is a process for replacing the president in the event of death, removal, resignation, or incapacity. “Biden doesn’t remember his time as vice president, but is he somehow qualified to be president for another four years?” asked Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri. “Biden’s new defense against otherwise criminal behavior: He’s an old man unable to remember who he is, where he’s been, or what he’s done,” he asserted. “It’s time for the 25th Amendment,” he said, referring to the constitutional rule that establishes that the person occupying the office of vice president succeeds the president if “he is unable to fulfill the powers and duties of his office.”

“Either Biden is mentally fit to stand trial and should be charged with mishandling classified documents as vice president, or he is unfit to serve as president. There is no middle ground,” tweeted New York Congresswoman Claudia Taney, who asked Attorney General Merrick Garland to explore the application of the 25th Amendment in a letter: “It’s up to you to explore the procedures for removing a president. Pursuant to the 25th Amendment to the United States Constitution. “President Biden needs to be impeached, or removed,” Tenney wrote, according to the text of the letter forwarded by conservative Fox.

In fact, there has been an avalanche of messages along the same lines: “This report calls Biden a ‘well-intentioned old man with a bad memory.’ That does not describe the man who should be the commander in chief of our armed forces and the defender of American freedom. Senator Rick Scott of Florida has written that it is time for his cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment. “If ever there was a time to invoke the 25th Amendment, isn’t it now?” asked Utah Senator Mike Lee. Georgia Rep. Mike Collins doesn’t ask, he says: “There has never been a stronger case for the 25th Amendment than there is now.”

“His current mental and physical condition precludes him from being President of the United States,” Rep. of North Carolina. Greg Murphy tweeted. “Today’s report by Robert Hurr tells us two things: There is a double standard of justice in this country. And Joe Biden is not fit for office,” said Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan. “We should demand that the 25th Amendment or Impeachment

(political process),” tweeted Marjorie Taylor Green, a Georgia congresswoman and loyal supporter of former President Donald Trump, who retweeted several messages to that effect.

“For the security of our nation, Joe Biden must resign,” wrote Mary Miller, a Republican representative from Illinois. “He cannot remember basic facts about his life. He is not able to remain Commander in Chief and every day he continues, he endangers the United States. If he does not resign, the cabinet will have to bring in the 25th amendment, he added.

The prosecutor’s report has angered Democrats, starting with the president: “I’m well-intentioned and I’m an old man. And I know what I’m doing. I have been President, I have put this country back on its feet. “I don’t need your recommendation,” Biden said in an appearance at the White House this Thursday. “I have a good memory,” he said at that short press conference, in which he showed mental agility at times, but also made an inadvertent slip when referring to Egypt as “Mexico.”

Biden’s lawyers unsuccessfully asked that some “inflammatory” references to the former president’s memory and mental acuity be removed from the report, which they consider out of place and a misrepresentation of what happened.

Prosecutors hit where it hurts Democrats. Voters believe Biden is too old to run for re-election, and a report with a Justice Department seal appears to sign him off, though the authors are not doctors but lawyers. For Trump, who appointed Hurr as prosecutor, it is the perfect gift in an election year in which he is seeking to return to the White House.

Some Democrats have also publicly come to the president’s defense. Rep. of Pennsylvania. “He did very well in this debate with the members,” Susan Wilde told NBC News after seeing the president on Thursday. “He’s very sharp, has no memory problems, and his only stumbling blocks are when he stumbles over words consistent with his lifelong speech impediment.” Biden struggled with stuttering when he was younger and often made lapses and blunders. But now those mistakes are used as ammunition against him.
