Health: promising discovery from CNRS against breast cancer – (France 2)
Researchers may have discovered how to stop breast cancer from metastasizing. Damian Maskret’s revelations, on the set of 20 Heures, Wednesday 31 January.
This is significant hope for women suffering from aggressive breast cancer. CNRS may have found a way to prevent metastases from appearing and growing. The discovery was made by a Franco-American team led by the CNRS. One in five breast cancers metastasize. “What the researchers discovered was that, in this case, there was a protein called SMYD2 that was present in great abundance.“, explains Damian Muskrat, doctor and journalist for France Television.
With metastases the chances of survival decrease
By blocking this protein, the researchers noticed that there were no more metastases. “When there is metastasis, the chances of survival are greatly reduced. Now all that’s left is to go from mouse to man. If the results are effective with fewer side effects, well, yes, that’s very promising indeed.” concludes Damien Muskrat.
