Naples, Florida. A small plane crashed into a vehicle this Friday While making an emergency landing on Interstate 75 in southwest Floridaauthorities said.
The crash landing occurred near the Pine Ridge Road exit in Collier County, just north of where the interstate heads east toward Fort Lauderdale.Along what is known as Alligator Alley.
The Collier County Sheriff’s Office, in a Facebook post, confirmed at least two deaths.
“The Federal Aviation Administration closed a large section of Interstate 75 in Collier County to investigate an aircraft crash with two confirmed fatalities,” the post read.
According to CNN, a pilot radioed air traffic controllers to report the emergency.
“I lost both engines. Emergency,” one pilot said in a broadcast captured by LiveACT.net.
The air traffic controller authorized the small plane to enter the runway, but the pilot replied in the last recording heard from the aircraft: “Authorized to land, but we are not going to reach the runway.”
Some pictures were shared on social networks by people passing by the accident area.
Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release that the southbound lanes were closed and advised motorists to seek alternate routes. A photo captured by the Florida Department of Transportation shows plumes of black smoke billowing from the plane.
