JLast Thursday, at the François Mitterrand Hospital Center, the Department of Gastroenterology introduced its new FibroScan. This very important tool for the detection of liver diseases was acquired thanks to the Convergences Hommes Citoyen Association (created in 1984 by the former mayor of Pau, Yves Urieta), which paid the hospital a check of 70,000 euros.
The delivery of the new FibroScan took place in the presence of Yves Urieta, Julien Mouret, Director of General Affairs and Cooperation, Doctor Ramuntcho Arotserena (Head of Gastroenterology Department) and Doctors Mireille Simon and Philippe Barthélemy.
The Department of Gastroenterology was already equipped with FibroScan since 2009. But technology has advanced since then. The new device, born from the brains of Bordeaux researchers, is a valuable cutting-edge tool for the seven gastroenterologists who make up Doctor Aerotserena’s team. It provides a quick, accurate and reliable assessment of liver elasticity that helps to anticipate diseases such as cirrhosis or cancer. Diagnosis is made in less than 5 minutes thanks to two ultrasound probes that penetrate the secretions of the diseased liver. The practitioner may also measure the liver fat burden as well as the weight burden.
This Fibroscan is the pride of the hospital center as many departments do not have one. At 64, only Bayonne and Pau have one. When we know that cancer detected in time is often curable, this tool is essential. Although FibroScan is smaller in size, it is no less effective. Doctor Aerotserena uses it about ten times a week.
