A viral, acute and febrile disease, it mainly affects pigs. In other mammals (cattle, small ruminants, cats, dogs, rats) it progresses very rapidly to death by central nervous system infection. This disease is not dangerous for humans.
Following the announcement of the infection in Muscaldi, the Departmental Directorate for the Protection of Populations of Pyrenees-Atlantiques issued a prefectural decree on 2 February to control the movement of swine in the department.
This specifically prohibits any movement of sows, pigs and wild boars coming from farms or places of detention located within a radius of 2 km around an identified outbreak (which is located in the municipalities of Maskaldi and Pagoleni) and/or an outbreak in connection with an epidemic.
By way of derogation, movement may be authorized under the cover of a pass issued by DDPP 64, after completion of a health check by a veterinarian, with favorable results.
Symptoms of Ojeski disease are as follows: fever, vomiting, locomotor disorder, and, in fattening pigs, cough, runny nose. When pregnant sows are affected, they often abort or give birth to mummified fetuses. It also happens that the infection is unexplained in affected pigs.
