Apple has less than two months left to come into compliance with European legislation on digital markets (DMA), with the measures coming into effect on March 6.

Apple can challenge the status of its various services before the European courts, but access controllers will still have to implement various DMA measures from March 6. A real big bang for iOS and the App Store that will allow apps to be downloaded outside of the official store (Sideloading) or even pay for in-app purchases with something other than Apple’s payment system.

From the company’s point of view, this is understandable: Apple has no desire to “break” the economic model on which the success of the iPhone was built. But the company has no choice, as Margrethe Vestager repeated to the main interested party, Tim Cook, during his trip to California! The European Commissioner for Competition also took the opportunity to say a word about the competition problems caused by Apple Music – with Apple risking huge fines.

Not too surprisingly, manufacturers are therefore in the process of making the necessary technical changes to comply with the DMA, believes Mark Gurman. In the coming weeks, Apple is expected to roll out the adjustments, which will include Splitting the App Store: one for the European Union, one for the rest of the world.

In this context, doesn’t the European store risk becoming a second-class citizen for Apple? Will some features intended for developers be available in Europe as well? It’s hard to imagine the group’s appearance, but if that’s the case, the competition could potentially attract those disenchanted with the less expensive App Store. The upheaval will in any case be followed closely around the world, including in the United States where authorities are closely interested in Apple’s practices.
