Namibian President Hage Jingob has died

At the age of 82, Namibian President Hedge Guingob died early Sunday morning, February 4, at a hospital in the Namibian capital Windhoek, where he was being treated after being diagnosed with cancer cells, the president announced in a message posted on social networks.

“It is with the greatest sadness and regret that I inform you that our beloved Dr. Hage G. Jingob, President of the Republic of Namibia has passed away today”

At the Lady-Pohamba Hospital where he received medical treatment, it was written in a declaration signed by the new interim head of state, Nangolo Mbumba, who was the vice-president until then.

Mr Guingob, Namibia’s president since 2014, was surrounded by his wife and children at the time of his death, the statement said.

Last month, the President announced that a routine medical check-up revealed the presence “Cancer Cells” at the head of state and made it clear that he was going to follow “Proper Treatment”, while retaining its functions. Hedge Gingob had already faced health problems, including before coming to power. He underwent brain surgery in 2013. Last year, he underwent aortic surgery in Namibia’s neighboring country of South Africa.

After being elected in 2014 and re-elected at the end of 2019, Mr. Jingob was previously prime minister for 12 years, a record for longevity in Namibia, a semi-desert country in southern Africa that was one of the last states on the continent. to gain independence in 1990. Presidential and legislative elections are scheduled to be held in the country at the end of the year.
