Mexico’s car exports hit levels not seen since 2011 • Economy and Finance • Forbes Mexico

At the end of 2023, Mexico exported 3,300,876 automobiles, a figure not seen since 2011, said Odrasir Barquera, general director of the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA).

In details offered at a conference this Tuesday, the manager highlighted that SUVs and pick-ups are segments that cover about 81.5% of the country’s automotive exports.

In detail, of the units exported by Mexico in 2023, 54.4% corresponds to SUVs, while 27.1% corresponds to pickups, while compact cars, luxury cars and subcompacts represent the remaining 18.5% of exported segments.

With respect to the year 2022, according to figures presented by AMIA, the number of cars exported from Mexico increased by 15.19% last year.

Regarding automotive production levels, Mexico registered a growth of 14.23% with the production of 3 million 779,234 units in 2023, said the leader of AMIA.

While explaining the positive results of Mexican automotive production and exports, Barquera highlighted that one of the main reasons favoring the national industry is the growth of sales in the United States market, the main destination of car shipments from Mexico and where it was consumed. Automotive products grew by around 8% last year.

For 2024, Odracir Barquera said the expectations for the industry are positive.

Not only is car production expected to increase significantly, he said, especially in the electric sector, with the addition of a third model to the 2nd that Ford and Chevrolet already produce in the country.
