Look out for this little-known and hard-to-see feature in January

Lung cancer is the most dangerous. A total of 52,777 new cases were diagnosed in 2023, including 33,438 new cases in men and 19,339 new cases in women. Cancer whose symptoms are sometimes not detected early unless you pay more attention to your health. Hence it is especially important to be alert for even the slightest sign as early diagnosis is essential. And one of them, especially hard to find at this time of year, should not be overlooked.

It is about weight loss. So, if you’re one of those people trying to lose a few pounds gained during the year-end holidays, be careful to distinguish between “intended” weight loss and “unintended” weight loss. According to figures reported by the Mirror, around 60% of people with lung cancer report loss of appetite and significant weight loss at the time of their diagnosis. Specifically, the body is no longer able to absorb all the fats, proteins, and carbohydrates contained in the food it eats.

Contact your doctor if these symptoms concern you

Note that other symptoms are particularly significant of lung cancer such as persistent cough, coughing up blood, persistent shortness of breath, fatigue, and pain when breathing or coughing. If these symptoms worry you and they do not go away, you should contact your general practitioner immediately.

As Health Insurance points out on its website, smoking, even a little, significantly increases the risk of developing lung cancer. It is responsible for eight out of 10 cancers. So we should avoid all forms of tobacco (cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, hookahs etc) as far as possible as well as cannabis, which is also carcinogenic. Nicotine replacement treatments (chewing gum, patches, etc.) are used as first-line treatment for smoking cessation. Drug treatment may also be prescribed to relieve withdrawal symptoms, reduce the urge to smoke, and prevent relapse.
