League of Legends developers have apologized for the “brutal” ranked reset at the start of Season 2024, offering an explanation for why it had to happen.
The ranked season for the 14th season of League of Legends has just begun. With the start of the ranked reset, players have begun the tough climb to the top, hoping to achieve a higher ranking than last season.
To get ranked though, players have to go through their ranked placement one more time. Ranked placements are important to the climbing experience, as games won can result in massive LP gains, while your rank is finalized once they’re done.

However in Season 2024, many League of Legends players noticed that they were placed much lower than usual. Getting the attention of the developers, he apologized and explained why this was the case.
Lead gameplay designer Riot Froxzone So many players took to Twitter to explain why they were ranked lower than usual.
“We reset the start of the season to where your MMR should put you. Because of what I mentioned last week, where we weren’t demoting people very often (especially from tier boundaries like E4, P4, etc.), there were a lot of cases where a player would get Sapphire with Gold MMR or Plate with Silver MMR, etc. were . “

To combat players not dropping enough, Riot put players’ season ranks where their hidden matchmaking ratings should put them. As a result, this may differ drastically from their previous order.
“This was usually because someone lost a lot at the tire boundary. “Some people’s placements seem a bit “brutal” as a result.”
Dev explained that this was one of the side effects of creating better visible ranked matches, and that it was his fault for allowing this to take place in the first place.
