La Jornada – The law that ignores the causes of migration is a dead letter: AMLO after speaking with Biden

Any migration law that ignores the causes of the phenomenon and does not address them is “condemned to be a dead letter,” President Andrés Manuel López Obrador warned his American counterpart, Joe Biden.

During the telephone conversation between the two leaders this Saturday where the central topic was immigration, the Mexican reiterated the proposal to the head of the White House Mexico to address this issue, where, among others, he proposed that Mexicans who have been there for more than five. For years to live and work honestly in the United States, to approve a $20 billion annual budget to support poor countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, to suspend sanctions on Venezuela to reduce migration flows, and to lift the economic embargo on Cuba. .

Through a statement issued tonight by the Presidency of the Republic, it was reported that López Obrador highlighted that both countries are independent and sovereign, so they can define their own policies regarding migration.

“However, with the sincerity that characterizes us, we express to President Biden that any legislation passed on this matter that ignores and does not address the causes of the immigration phenomenon is condemned to be a dead letter.”

In their proposals, the Mexicans also stated that the United States maintain the program it currently implements to receive migrants through legal channels; Opting not to build walls or close the border, “because it doesn’t solve the causes of migration or solve the problem. “It’s pure political-electioneering.”

The Mexican president’s proposal also includes measures to combat drug trafficking and the use of chemical drugs such as fentanyl; The sale and export of arms from the United States to Mexico would be regulated; Develop a joint development plan to promote industrialization and trade within the framework of T-MEC, continue to strengthen North America as a region in the world, and define a strategy for economic integration across the continent.

As well as reaffirming the commitment to maintain relations of cooperation, friendship and respect for the respective sovereignties.

“The conversation was very beneficial, motivated by the principles of mutual interest, good neighborliness, friendship and the policy of cooperation,” said the native of Tabasco.
