Kids under 18 will get free meals in Miami next summer

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) will provide free meals to those under 18 next summer. This will take place in Miami-Dade County, Florida. This was announced by the Community Action and Human Services Department (CAHSD) of that area.

The announcement indicates that the funds necessary to implement this benefit program for youth in the Florida region already exist. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniela Levine Cava expressed her commitment to the project. “Our goal is to make sure no child goes hungry, especially during the summer.”

“Through the Summer Food Service Program, we are proud to provide free meals while ensuring the well-being of our community’s youth. Together, we strive to promote a healthy and thriving environment for every child,” highlighted Levine Cava.

Free food before election

The main objective of this program is exactly that. It includes providing free meals during the months of June, July and August, precisely before the elections. Supply points will be located at various locations in the county. Strict health and safety protocols will be respected.

SFSP is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture and overseen by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The program will provide nutritionally balanced meals. It was noted that hot and cold food would be prepared following health standards. In all cases, fresh local produce will be used.

From June 10 to August 16 this year, all children under the age of 18 will be able to get their food. There shall be no distinction of income, race, gender, disability or national origin.

During each school year, children rely on free or reduced-price meal programs offered by their schools. However, they may face food insecurity when summer comes. The goal of the program is to fill that gap by providing free meals to children and youth in low-income communities.
