Jennifer Lawrence played the role of Rhee Dolly Winter Bone, a teenage girl lives in a poverty-stricken home with her mother and younger siblings. Lawrence’s character faces all odds to find her estranged father so her family can be kicked out of their home.
In an interview with the Ocean County Register, Lawrence insisted that she really wanted to play Rhee Dolly because the character was one of the best female leads she had ever seen. She also admired the character’s strength and resilience. she said,
“I thought it was the best role I’ve seen for a woman in a long time. Sometimes, I see something and I just have to have it. And those are the films I book. “She’s a young female protagonist who doesn’t follow a man around.
“She has a strength that I wish I had,” she said. “I love playing characters that I admire because it’s like Halloween. I get to dress like them for six weeks. The action and dialogue are so realistic and so continuous. The film caters to no one. I love this kind of movie.”
