The general director of the Paris Transport Manager raised the possibility that Google Maps, City Mapper and other apps offering public transport routes would be “shut down” if their route recommendations were not followed during the Paris Olympics.
Ile-de-France Mobility, the Parisian public transport manager, assures us that Parisian public transport will be ready in time for the opening of the Olympic Games in six months. To achieve this, ile-de-France Mobilité has put in place a transport plan that it intends to impose on everyone, especially through a dedicated mobile application. “Paris Public Transport 2024”, as it is called, is scheduled to enter service next April. It will allow you to buy your package from your smartphone, but above all it will be “essential” to get around, announced Laurent Probst, general director of Ile-de-France Mobilites, in an interview. Western France
.To ensure the fluidity of traffic in public transport, the Ile-de-France mobility application “will direct visitors not by the shortest route, but by the most comfortable route”, explains Laurent Probst.
Before concluding: ” For example, if it seems obvious to regular people to take line 13 to get to the Stade de France, the app suggests they go to line 14 to distribute the flow. »
Unfortunately for Île-de-France mobilités, there is little chance that Parisians or tourists will abandon their general application in favor of transport public Paris 2024.
The only problem, such programs Google Maps Or Citymapper, which allows you to find public transportation routes, uses algorithms that are supposed to help you find the shortest or fastest route. Which doesn’t really respect the IDF Mobilités transport plans.
” We asked them all to relay our transport plans so that the traveler can take the route we suggest to them. We believe they will play the game. » Then the General Director of the Parisian Transport Manager confidently explained.
So what happens if one of these actors does not comply with these demands? The Ile-de-France Mobilites clearly threaten: “ If they do not, the state will have to take necessary decisions. They will be asked to close their application. This is a public safety issue. »
Is this threat, serious as it may be, still necessary (and possible to carry out)? Because in the event that Parisian public transport becomes saturated, Google Maps and Citymapper algorithms are, in theory, able to adapt to automatically suggest alternative routes.
Asked by us about the possibility of blocking Google Maps during the Olympics, a Google spokesperson fumed: “Our ongoing collaboration with the French authorities aims to ensure that relevant and up-to-date information is displayed on Google Maps and to provide our users with the best possible experience in the context of the Olympic Games. »
Can Ile-de-France mobility boast a better performance than Google and others? We will have to wait for the opening date of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on July 26 to find out.
