The person who made the discovery was the sister of local resident Jalen Parker. The woman heard the baby crying while taking out the garbage and pulled him out of the container at about 10:20 p.m.
After the discovery, he took her to his home, where he wrapped her in a blanket and warmed her before police took the child and drove her to ECU Health Medical Center, Greenville police reported. The child is in good condition and has no signs of abuse.
Similarly, the authorities started a search for the mother, who turned out to be a minor living in the same apartment building. She was taken into custody by the North Carolina Department of Social Services.
At this time, no charges have been filed in the case, but police are investigating the incident as possible abandonment.
Greenville Police Lt. Justin Wooten said this isn’t the first time they’ve seen a situation like this in the city.
“If someone finds themselves in a situation where they can’t care for their child, there are resources available,” Wooten said. “We don’t want anyone to feel so desperate that they have to resort to something like this.”
