The GiantX, following their early elimination from the LEC Winter Split 2024 playoffs, are planning changes to their coaching staff. Jonas “Hidon” Wra could be replaced as head coach by Christoph “Cas” van Oudeusden, with Kim “Trick” Gang-eun considered as an assistant coach to revitalize the team.
A new boss at the helm of GiantX?
At the 2024 LEC Winter Split, GiantX went through a difficult period, performing below expectations during the regular season and even during the playoffs. The team, born from the merger between Axel and Giants, started their season with a win against Team Vitality but quickly ran into obstacles, losing to teams like Team BDS and SK Gaming, which got off to a rocky start. However, during the competition, GiantX proved its competitiveness with wins against Rogue and MDK, highlighting its potential to compete against the best teams. However, the team also experienced significant losses against big-name opponents such as G2 Esports and Fnatic, showing the challenges they faced throughout the tournament.
At the end of the regular season, GiantX finished in 8th place, recording four wins from nine matches, which tied them with Team Vitality and Team Heretics. This performance allowed him to qualify for the playoffs. However, its run in the elimination stages was short-lived: the team was first defeated by G2 Esports, then eliminated in the first round of the bracket, losing by MAD Lions KOI, without winning a match. The losing streak highlights GiantX’s difficulty in winning against top teams, highlighting a season marked by highs and especially lows. Despite some moments of competence and potential, the team often looked troubled, struggling to find consistency and strategy to win against formidable opponents.
After its initial elimination from the playoffs, GiantX now focuses on preparing for its next competitive segment. As revealed by Sheep Esports, the team is considering making significant changes to its coaching staff for the Spring Split. Jonas “Hidon” Wra, the current head coach, is expected to step down, handing over the reins to Christoph “Cas” van Oudeusden, who held the position of tactical coach. This strategic change will be complemented by the arrival of Kim “Trick” Gang-eun as assistant coach. Trick, a former jungler with a track record at CJ Entus, G2 Esports and SK Gaming, has already supported the team during the Winter Split in an unofficial capacity. Details regarding Hidon’s professional future are uncertain at this time.
