Three years ago, Apple banned Fortnite from the App Store for violating store rules by studio Epic Games. After a long legal battle between the two giants, the famous battle royale will finally make its return to iPhone and iPad.
It is the conclusion of a saga that has lasted nearly three years. In May 2021, Epic Games, the company behind the Fortnite phenomenon, took Apple to court in the United States for abuse of dominance after it removed Fortnite from the App Store.
The Cupertino giant was accused of taking advantage of the App Store’s monopoly on Apple terminals to claim a 30% commission on all purchases made from the App Store. For its part, Apple required all developers to go through the App Store for in-app transactions, and therefore, pay Apple this coveted commission.
For almost three years now, battle royale fans have been unable to play their favorite game from iPhone or iPad. But the good news is that this absence is coming to an end.
Along with sideloading, a practice that aims to force Apple to authorize downloads outside of the App Store, Epic Games is rubbing its hands together. Indeed, in a tweet published by the firm this Thursday afternoon, it announced that Fortnite will make its comeback on the Apple App Store. “After this year”
.“Remember Fortnite on iOS? What if we bring it back? Later this year, Fortnite will return to Europe on iOS via the Epic Games Store. Apple, the world is watching”American studios rejoice.
Great news, which will most likely please Fortnite fans. And as you might expect, the game won’t actually be returning to the App Store, but to the Epic Games Store iOS version. An App Store that isn’t available yet but will come thanks to sideloading, possibly enabled by iOS 17.4.
